I’m going to walk you through creating an adorable yet professional dog paw logo icon in Adobe Illustrator. This tutorial is perfect for beginners, and I’ll break down each step to make it super easy to follow.

Getting Started: Setting Up Your Workspace

First things first, let’s get our workspace ready. If you’re following along with my reference image, you can download it above.

Once you have your workspace set and the image downloaded:

  1. Import the reference image
  2. Set its opacity to 50% (this makes it easier to see what we are doing)
  3. Lock that layer by clicking right to the eye icon
  4. Create a new layer on top

Creating the Main Pad

Let’s start with the bottom pad – this will be the foundation of our paw print:

  1. Select the Ellipse tool (shortcut: L)
  2. Draw an oval that matches the size of the reference outline
  3. Moving onto the smaller sections, hold Shift with the Ellipse tool to create a perfect circle to match the shape
  4. Hold Alt to create a copy, and drag it over. Holding Shift to keep it aligned

Align Pad Shapes and Smooth Shape

Getting everything perfectly aligned and smoothed out is crucial for a professional look:

  1. Select all the shapes
  2. In the Properties Panel, Under the Align section, click on “Horizontal Distribute Center”
  3. Use the Pathfinder panel to unite your shapes
  4. Switch to the Direct Selection tool (shortcut: A)
  5. Select and round those anchor points for a smooth finish
  6. For the bottom section, delete the middle point using the Delete Anchor Point tool (minus key)
  7. Round the two remaining anchor points

Creating the Nail Details (Optional)

Want to add a bit more realism to the design with the nails? Here’s how:

  1. Use the Pen tool(P) to create a small triangle
  2. Start with the bottom line and use Smart Guidelines for perfect centering
  3. Add curve using Effects > Warp > Arc (30% bend, vertical orientation)
  4. Don’t forget to expand the appearance (Object > Expand Appearance)

Finishing Touches

Let’s bring it all together:

  1. Draw and rotate an oval to match the reference
  2. In the Properties panel, under Pathfinder, select unite
  3. Use Alt + drag to create a copy
  4. Match the reference by rotating the shape a bit more
  5. Group them with (Ctrl/Cmd + G)
  6. Use Alt to create a copy and drag it over to the other side into place
  7. Group the pads together and then select the main pad
  8. Center-align everything and you are done
