Step 1: Create a New Document

  1. Open Adobe Illustrator and create a new document of any size.
  2. Ensure the fill color is set to black and there is no stroke.

Step 2: Create the Skull Base

  1. Ellipse Tool: Select the Ellipse Tool (L) from the toolbar.
    • Draw a small ellipse.
    • In the properties panel, set the width to 133 pixels and the height to 125 pixels.
  2. Zoom In: Hit Z for zoom and click and drag the cursor to the right to zoom in.

Step 3: Add Rectangles

  1. Rectangle Tool: Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and draw a rectangle.
    • In the properties panel, set the size to 90 by 73 pixels.
    • Align the top edge of the rectangle to the center of the ellipse. The word “Center” or “Intersect” will appear when properly aligned.
  2. Duplicate Rectangle: Hold the Alt key and drag down to create a copy of the rectangle.
    • Set the size to 61 by 57 pixels.
    • Align the top edge to the center of the rectangle above.
  3. Align and Unite: Click and drag over all the shapes.
    • Go to the Align tab in the top right corner, under Align Objects, select Horizontal Align Center.
    • Go to the Pathfinder tab at the bottom and click Unite.

Step 4: Create the Cheekbones

  1. Rectangle Tool: Draw another rectangle.
    • Using the Direct Selection Tool (A), click and drag over the left-side anchor points.
    • In the properties panel, select the option to Convert Anchor Points to Smooth to round the points.
    • Set the width and height to 42 by 31 pixels.
  2. Rotate and Place: Hit V to switch to the Selection Tool, hover around a corner for the rotate option, and rotate the rectangle to about 30 degrees.
    • Place the rectangle inside the skull shape, aligning the edge with the ellipse.
    • Duplicate the rectangle (Alt + Drag) and flip it horizontally. Align as before.
  3. Group and Unite: Select both rectangles (Shift + Click), group them (Ctrl + G), and align them with the skull.
    • In the Pathfinder tab, click Unite.

Step 5: Adjust Skull Shape

  1. Round Corners: Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to click and drag over the two anchor points connecting the skull to the cheekbones.
    • Drag the circles out to round the corners.
  2. Delete Anchor Points: Switch to the Delete Anchor Point Tool (Minus key) and remove the points below the cheekbones.
    • Drag the bottom anchor points down.
  3. Round the Bottom: Use the Anchor Point Tool (Shift + C) to curve the path at the bottom.

Step 6: Create the Teeth

  1. Rectangle Tool: Draw a small rectangle (3 pixels wide).
    • Duplicate the rectangle (Alt + Drag) 11 pixels over, then use Ctrl + D to duplicate it three more times.
    • Group the rectangles (Ctrl + G) and align them with the skull.
    • Use the Minus Front option in the Pathfinder tab to cut the teeth shapes out.
  2. Round Teeth: Select the top anchor points of the middle teeth and bring them down three steps.

Step 7: Create the Eyes

  1. Rectangle Tool: Draw a rectangle (33 by 28 pixels).
    • Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) to convert the side anchor points to smooth.
    • Adjust the anchor points to create the desired eye shape.
    • Align and center the eyes, then use the Minus Front option in the Pathfinder tab.

Step 8: Create the Nose

  1. Polygon Tool: Select the Polygon Tool and draw a triangle.
    • Change the polygon side count to 3 and set the size to 28 by 36 pixels.
    • Add an anchor point at the bottom and drag it up 8 pixels.
    • Round all corners by dragging the circles inward.
    • Align the triangle with the skull and use Minus Front in the Pathfinder tab.

Step 9: Create the Crossbones

  1. Rectangle Tool: Draw a rectangle (165 by 20 pixels).
    • Create another smaller rectangle (18 by 18 pixels) and convert the right-side anchors to smooth.
    • Rotate the smaller rectangle 30 degrees and align it with the larger rectangle.
    • Duplicate and flip the smaller rectangle for the other end.
  2. Merge Shapes: Select all shapes and use the Merge option in the Pathfinder tab.
    • Rotate the bone 20 degrees, copy it (Ctrl + C), and paste in place (Ctrl + Shift + V).
    • Flip the copy vertically and merge both bones.
    • Align the crossbones with the skull.
